I am a researcher and teacher in English literature. I earned my doctoral degree from the English Faculty of the University of Oxford in 2009. I have taught English language and literature in Britain, Germany and Mexico since I completed my master’s degree in English at the University of Bamberg, Germany. I am interested in reading and reception studies. My first monograph relates S. T. Coleridge’s early poetry and prose to the circulation of Kantian philosophy in the English public sphere during the Romantic period. As Junior Professor in English literature and culture at the University of Mainz, I have led the funded research project called the “Visceral Novel Reader” since 2019, collaborating with a doctoral researcher and student assistants. The project develops a diachronic model for the transformative potential of narrative for readers’ embodied repertoire. This work grows out of my previous research in the medical humanities and collaborations with international experts in Europe and North America. My future work aims to investigate the role of narrative in planetary health and well-being. Part of this plan is the roundtable I have organised entitled “Literary practices and Sustainability in Higher Education” at the annual conference of the European Society for the Study of English at Mainz in 2022. I look forward to continuing this work at SOL, to meeting staff and students, and to getting to know the communities inside and outside Lund University when I start my position in September 2022. Best wishes, Monika
