Ny professor i islamologi: Oliver Scharbrodt

Lunds universitet har kommit i mål med ytterligare en av rekryteringarna inom professorsprogrammet och är glada att hälsa Oliver Scharbrodt till Lund inom ett par månader.

Oliver Scharbrodt will join Lund University as Professor of Islamic Studies in March 2022. In his research he focusses on modern Islam in two regional contexts: the Middle East and Europe. He uses historical and textual approaches to understand the intellectual history of modern Islam in the Middle East and also engages in ethnographic research to examine the minority experiences of Muslims in Europe. Oliver has done extensive research on Muslims in Europe as editor-in-chief of the Yearbook of Muslims in Europe (2014-2019) and remained member of its editorial board until 2021. Equally, his work illustrates the complex and diverse dynamics of modern Islamic thought, for example, in his forthcoming book on the highly influential 19th century Muslim reformer Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905). Informed by recent debates in Religious Studies, Oliver’s research seeks to broaden the methodological remit of Islamic Studies as an interdisciplinary field of research that combines historical expertise, language skills and an in-depth engagement with lived Islam through ethnographic research. His current research project on transnational Twelver Shia Islam, funded by a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council, brings these different disciplinary perspectives together in order to produce a new understanding of global role of Twelver Shia Islam.
